Our January Community Cinema selection, Garbage Dreams, asks you to think very deeply about garbage (and recycling it). Cairo, Egypt’s Zabaleen are mostly Coptic Christians who provide garbage collection cheaply or for free, making a living by sorting through the trash they collect, and selling the metal, plastic, paper, glass, and other materials to recyclers. Some items are set aside for repair and reuse; food waste is given to the pigs and goats.

The Zaballeen live on the outskirts of Cairo, in Mokattam, the main
setting for GARBAGE DREAMS. The garbage is collected by the men,
and brought here where it is piled into large open rooms or sheds and
sorted by the women and children. Families tend to specialize in sorting
certain types of materials, such as glass or paper, and particular families
take charge of preparing that material for recycling. It is estimated that
the Zaballeen recycle about 80 percent of the solid waste they collect.

Boston Cares About D TOUR

Boston Cares, a member of the Hands On Network

Boston Cares, a member of the Hands On Network

Even before its September 19 kick off premiere, D TOUR is already causing a stir in the Boston metro area.

Boston Cares will be partnering with Hosteling International and the New England Organ Bank for the event, and an exciting panel is currently in the works. A living donor, an organ recipient, and a staff member from the center will be on site for a revealing and reflective discussion after the film. Our proud panelist and recipient of a heart in 2004, Richard Gates has taken on his second chance at life in a most inspiring way.

D TOUR will be held at the Boston Public Library from 2-4pm on September 19. Resources will also be on hand at the screening to learn more about organ donation and action steps to take.  Any questions about the Boston screening please contact Shannon Crane at Boston Cares dot org.

Grand Rapids Kicks Off the New Season of Community Cinema

D TOUR Panel Receives Well-Deserved Round of Applause

Michiganders kicked off Community Cinema’s 2009-2010 Season last night in Grand Rapids at The Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts. After the screening of D TOUR, we had a small but passionate crowd for this film, and an extremely knowledgeable panel.  Just a few months ago, Jill Morrill donated her kidney to her 12-year-old daughter, who suffers from cystinosis.  Sue Lewis donated her kidney two years ago to the father of one of her son’s friends.  Tricia Coyle received a donated kidney a couple of months ago through a paired donor program in Toledo.  Her daughter, Emily Coyle, worked hard to spread the word about her mother needing a donor – and recently found out that she suffers from the same genetic disorder that caused her mother’s kidney to fail.
