ITVS Partners With telegraph21

ITVS is proud to announce a partnership with telegraph21 (t21), a curated website that features documentaries and art videos from around the world as well as films from Independent Lens, Community Cinema, and other ITVS initiatives.

Part-gallery and part-video magazine, t21 will launch January 11 and offer short (10 minutes or less), interactive video package three times a week that provide viewers access to hard-to-find videos, and the ability to get involved and contribute their own ideas.
The site will feature works from award-winning journalists, filmmakers, and artists and provide an ongoing platform for media producers and film festivals to promote their work and interact with viewers –– providing an invaluable resource to those in the independent film community.

Ultimately, t21 plans to offer it’s viewers a new kind of “cinematic” experience –– online and offline –– using qualities of the digital space (mobility, flexibility, engagement and social interaction) to personalize the experience of watching full-length documentaries.

Currently two Independent Lens broadcasts Between the Folds and Young@Heart are featured on t21 with exclusive interviews from the directors and interactive features. P Star Rising by Gabriel Nobel will be featured in the coming month.

At the Intersection of Art and Science Where 2D becomes 3D: BETWEEN THE FOLDS

“This film … reveals origami itself as richer and more intricate than you could imagine… and by the end, you find yourself convinced that the mystery of folding could be one of the universe’s deep secrets.” — Chris Anderson, Curator, TED

When you look at a piece of paper, what do you see? Blurring the mysterious lines between art, science, sculpture and math, the film is an exhilarating adventure into origami, or paperfolding, featuring works of art whose emotional expressiveness and engineering complexity defy logic. Just as Michelangelo might have seen a statue standing frozen inside a block of marble, the eccentric artists and scientists in BETWEEN THE FOLDS envision the three-dimensional possibilities of paper, and, as if by alchemy, change the mundane into the poetic and magical — all with no scissors, no tape and no glue. Ultimately, the medium of paperfolding itself — a blank, uncut square — emerges as a resounding metaphor for the creative potential of us all.

Directed, written and produced by Vanessa Gould, BETWEEN THE FOLDS will preview throughout the month of November nationwide. Watch the preview trailer below and find your event!

Our national partners create unique ways for audiences to learn more about paperfolding and the intersection of art and mathematics.

OrigamiUSA‘s  mission is to share the joy of paper folding, preserve its history, nurture its growth, bring people together and encourage community among paper folders. OrigamiUSA offers a wide range of useful resources for the origami aficionado; a model database with over 30,000 entries, origami terms, local groups, international groups, discussion groups, our lending library, and even downloadable diagrams.

The Mathematical Association of America is the largest professional society that focuses on mathematics accessible at the undergraduate level. A network of 20,000 educators and math enthusiasts across the country, the Mathematical Association of America seeks to support math education through research, professional development, public policy and public appreciation.

Beyond The Box, the ITVS Blog, interviewed BETWEEN THE FOLDS Executive Producer Sally Rosenthal. Read that interview here. Read on for more clips from the film and information about the artists in the film…

Recent Talkback About Independent Lens & Community Cinema This Month

Always thought-provoking, sometimes controversial, Independent Lens and Community Cinema bring you documentaries, dramas, shorts and Web-exclusive projects made by independent thinkers. Check out some of the recent Talkback from viewers about films airing this month and from recent Community Cinema events.

HERB & DOROTHY

“What an inspiring film! If the Vogels are ‘greedy,’ it is yet a selfless compulsion–the best kind–that recognizes beauty and the persons that grow with the art. And thanks to the filmmaker who persevered to tell this intimate, quirky story.”

Posted by: Cynthia Pon on October 15, 2009

“Congratulations to all: Herb and Dorothy for your beautiful collections and sharing your love of each other and your wonderful collections. PBS you did your viewers a great service by bringing us this magnificent presentation… It touched my heart as I am sure it did others. Thank you very much.”

Posted by: Nancy on October 14, 2009

“What an informative film, captivating. Thank you to the Vogels for sharing their story with all of us and especially for supporting artists for so many years. And thank you for the gift to the National Gallery of Art.”

COPYRIGHT CRIMINALS

Guests at this month’s Community Cinema preview events for COPYRIGHT CRIMINALS have strong opinions about the topics raised by the film. One of Seattle’s foremost hip-hop DJs, DJ Hyphen of KUBE 93 FM, talked to us about a few of the film’s topics in the lobby before the film. He observes, “There is a fine line between borrowing and stealing.”
